UPDATE: A steel structure carrying by a tractor-trailer fell onto a van with two occupants after it slammed into the Paterson Plank Road overpass on eastbound Route 3 in Secaucus early this afternoon, responders told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
A van passenger was extricated and the driver initially remained pinned after the mishap just before 12:30 p.m., authorities said. Both were alert and conscious, they said.
The bridge may have been compromised, one of them told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. Engineers were examining it.
The eastbound highway remained closed as of 1 p.m., with two westbound lanes open.
Jersey City sent a rescue unit, joining responders from Secaucus and Kearny, as well as a rig from Hackensack University Medical Center. East Rutherford, Lyndhurst and Rutherford were providing mutual aid.
