YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Closter police said a Demarest man found slumped behind the wheel of his car, with several small bags of heroin on his lap and passenger seat, became combative at headquarters and had to be restrained, Police Chief Dennis Kaine said this afternoon.

Officer Vincent Sarubbi said he found Meyhar Afkari passed out in his car, hunched over its center console, at the corner of Lake Street and Closter Dock Road last Friday.

Checking on his welfare Sarubbi observed in plain view numerous wax glassine envelopes containing heroin on [Afkari's] lap and on the passenger seat, Kaine told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

He arrested Afkari for driving while under the influence and with possession of heroin and drug parahernalia.

Those charges were upgraded at headquarters after Afkari struck a police officer and made threats against them during processing. Charges include aggravated assault on a police officer, making terroristic threats, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

An April 15 arraignment date was set.
